Adams was born and lived in Castle Rock Colorado, as one of the seven kids who was her smallest. Her father served in U.S. service in Italy. In the mid-1990s she began performing professionally and dancing with the Boulder Dinner Theatre and the Country Dinner Playhouse in Colorado. Following her move to Minnesota where she was a part of an undocumentary-style film called Drop Dead Gorgeous (1998) which focused on beauty contests. Then, in Los Angeles, she pursued acting as a profession following her film debut in which she played the dizzy, but friendly contestant. Her husband Tony Curtis was her partner between June 1950 and September 1992. She had two children, Kelly Curtis as well as Jamie Lee Curtis. Leigh, who was introduced to her by the actress Norma Shearer Leigh signed a deal with MGM to start her film career star in the late 1940s. She starred in a number of films that became popular over the decade that followed, including Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (from 1960) and Living It Up (1954), starring Martin Lewis.
